What was once the best-kept secret of the mountain West region is now a place that has people scrambling in droves to get here.

Denver is the best place in the entire nation to live, according to U.S. News & World Report’s inaugural “Best Places to Live” rankings.

“Denver ranks as the No. 1 best place to live, in part because of its healthy job market, cost of living and perception as a desirable place to live,” the report says.
Colorado Springs also landed a spot on the list, coming in at No. 5 overall, the report says.

To compile the list, the Washington, D.C.-based news outlet selected the nation’s 100 largest metro areas by population and ranked them based on:

-Value of living there, which included factors like home ownership versus renting and cost of living.
-Quality of life, which included crime rates, quality and affordability of health care and education, well-being and the   commute times.
-Job market health, which included unemployment rates and median salaries.
-Desire to live there, compiled from online surveys.
-Number of people moving there, based on net migration data.
“The Best Places to Live ranking accounts for the most important concerns people have about where to live, such as cost of living, employment opportunities and access to good schools,” said Miriam Weiner, product manager for Real Estate at U.S. News. “Top-ranked areas not only have steady job markets, but they also have attributes that contribute to a high quality of life – affordability, low crime rates, shorter commute times and quality health care.”

The report draws on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Gallup-Healthways well-being index, the FBI Uniform Crime Report and U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools” and “Best Hospitals” reports, as well as polling from Internet users.
